AI Coding Agents & Tools
Coding agents are the part of the AI stack that changes code instead of talking about it: terminal agents that plan, edit files and run tests; editor assistants that stay inside the flow; and the SDKs people use to build their own. This board tracks all three, assembled from GitHub topic pages for coding agents, coding assistants, AI coding and Claude-style agent tooling, ranked by stars. That mix means a fully autonomous agent and a small review helper share one list, so the sections below separate terminal agents, editor integration, review and refactoring, and the frameworks underneath them. Cards carry language, stars and forks; detail pages add description, license, last push date, README and related projects. Before pointing one of these at a real repository, read the licence and the activity dates — not just the star count.

→What a coding agent is — and is not
A coding agent is a loop around a language model that can read a repository, decide on a change, apply it, run something to check the result, and try again. The model supplies the reasoning; everything that makes it an agent — file tools, a shell, diff application, a test runner, a stopping rule — is ordinary software. That is why two projects built on the same underlying model behave so differently: they differ in what they let the model see and in how they decide the task is finished.
The useful axis is not how autonomous an agent claims to be, but where the human sits in the loop. A terminal agent works from a task description and reports back a diff. An editor assistant proposes changes inline and waits for a keystroke. A review agent reads a pull request and comments. Choose by where you are willing to review, not by which one sounds smartest.
Agent SDKs compared: OpenAI Agents SDK, Claude Agent SDK, LangChain and LangGraph
The names overlap and the categories do not. A vendor agent SDK is the shortest path to a working loop on that vendor’s models: it ships tool calling, handoffs and tracing, and stays close to one API. LangChain is a broad integration library — model providers, retrievers, vector stores, tool wrappers — and LangGraph is its graph runtime for stateful, branching workflows with explicit control flow. The practical split: take a vendor SDK when you want to move fast on one model family, and LangChain or LangGraph when the value is in the integrations, or when the workflow needs durable state, retries and human-in-the-loop checkpoints that you would otherwise write yourself.
The honest answer to which is better is that they are not mutually exclusive. Plenty of production agents use one library for retrieval and a vendor SDK for the reasoning loop. What you should avoid is adopting a framework to dodge writing thirty lines of your own control flow, then spending a month working around the framework once your flow stops matching its shape.
What to check before you hand an agent a repository
Three things, in this order. Permissions: what can it execute, what network can it reach, can it push? Run it in a sandbox or on a branch, never on a machine whose environment holds production credentials. Cost per task: agent loops re-send context on every step, so a long task can consume far more tokens than the size of the final diff suggests. Liveness: look at the licence and the last push date on the detail page. This category moves faster than any other board on this site, and the most starred option is not automatically the maintained one.
Coding agent questions
What is the difference between an agent SDK and an agent framework? An SDK exposes the primitives of one model provider with few abstractions; a framework abstracts many providers and orchestration patterns. Frameworks trade directness for portability.
OpenAI Agents SDK vs LangChain — which should I use? Take the vendor SDK when you are committed to one model family and want the smallest layer between you and the API; take LangChain or LangGraph when you need many integrations or durable multi-step state.
What is a coding agent? Software that wraps a language model with file, shell and test tools so it can make a code change, verify it and iterate — with a human reviewing the result.
Are coding agents safe to run against a real repository? Only with a sandbox, a branch and scoped credentials. Nothing on this board checks your secrets for you; that part is configuration.
