Memoripy v4

Agent memory with receipts

Memoripy is an evidence-first, local memory runtime for AI agents. It decides what deserves durable memory, preserves how facts change, and explains why every recalled result was selected.

Most memory systems optimize for remembering more. Memoripy v4 optimizes for remembering what is supported, current, correctly scoped, and useful.

v4 is currently developed on the v4 branch. The PyPI stable release may still point to the older API until v4 is published.

Install v4 from source

Memoripy preserves Paris as historical evidence, keeps Istanbul as the current location, supersedes the previous Tokyo preference, and returns the evidence behind each current result.

The memory write barrier

Automatic memory writes pass through an admission policy before they touch durable state.

The external instruction remains inspectable evidence, but it does not become a trusted preference.

V4 supports more than a semantic versus episodic split. Built-in memory kinds include:

Retrieval is a union, not a lexical gate

Memoripy runs independent retrieval lanes and combines them with reciprocal-rank fusion. A weak lexical match cannot prevent a better semantic or temporal candidate from being considered.

A receipt records which lanes found the memory, its rank in each lane, the fused contribution, the scope tier, and the reasons it was included.

Scope isolation and adaptive expansion

Memory can be scoped by:

Retrieval starts with the narrowest relevant scope and expands only when coverage is insufficient. Cross-user and cross-organization retrieval are not allowed because two records happen to be semantically similar.

Brain mode without popularity poisoning

attention_fast keeps activation, dormancy, reactivation, working memory, and consolidation. V4 separates raw retrieval frequency from actual utility.

The engine tracks distinct signals such as retrieval, context inclusion, confirmed use, successful outcomes, corrections, rejections, and failures. A memory does not become important merely because it was repeatedly retrieved.

Forget is recorded as a versioned deletion rather than silently erasing the audit trail. Applications that need irreversible evidence deletion should implement that separately according to their privacy and legal requirements.

File-store reliability

The local file repository now:

Corrupt state is not silently treated as an empty memory store.

HTTP service

The bundled single-store service is intended for local development and controlled deployments. For authenticated multi-tenant hosting, use the tenant gateway described below.

Official MCP server

Install the optional MCP v2 dependency and run the stdio server:

The server exposes capture, recall, explain, correct, forget, audit, and list tools. Network transports are deliberately refused unless a token file is configured:

Bearer tokens can be restricted to memoripy:read, memoripy:write, or memoripy:admin, and may lock the connected agent to a user and tenant scope. See the MCP guide.

Hosted multi-tenant gateway and inspector

Create a tenant credential:

Then run physically isolated tenant stores behind one authenticated gateway:

The registry stores hashed tokens, supports revocation and expiry, and binds every request to the authenticated tenant's organization scope. Open /inspector to search memories, inspect receipts and evidence, audit the store, correct records, and version-delete memory.

This is a self-hosted API-key authorization layer, not a bundled enterprise identity provider. Deploy it behind TLS and an appropriate reverse proxy. See the gateway guide.

Assisted and temporal extraction

The default extractor now attaches deterministic temporal validity for explicit ISO dates, ranges, and common relative phrases such as last month and three days ago.

For broader language, use the optional strict assisted extractor:

Automatically accepted model candidates must cite an exact span from the evidence. The model cannot elevate source trust or bypass admission policy. See assisted extraction.

Tune and compare

Tune retrieval against your own memory contracts:

Use the selected profile in the service, inspector, or gateway. Tuning is bounded to retrieval behavior and cannot rewrite trust, admission, or tenant-isolation rules.

Run the same contracts against available systems:

Adapters are included for Memoripy, Mem0, Hindsight, LangMem, and Graphiti. Missing services, credentials, or databases are reported as unavailable and excluded, not assigned fabricated zero scores. See tuning and comparisons.

Bring your own models

The core does not require an LLM or embedding provider. The deterministic extractor is intentionally conservative rather than pretending to understand every sentence.

For broader automatic extraction, supply your own extractor that implements:

For real semantic embeddings, supply an embedding model with get_embedding(text).

Built-in adapters are included for OpenAI-compatible APIs, OpenRouter, Azure OpenAI, and Ollama. Provider calls remain optional.

Compatibility

V4 keeps the v3 assistant-oriented surface:

It also retains the lower-level CRUD methods and attempts to import the legacy MemoryManager, JSONStorage, and InMemoryStorage wrappers.

V2 and v3 snapshots are migrated to schema 4 when imported. Migration supplies safe defaults for fields that did not exist previously. Review the imported store with memoripy audit before production use.
